2017 Visit to Ochsenfurt
In early July 29 members participated in the 2017 visit to Ochsenfurt. The group included some town councillors and Wimborne Minster Mayor Terry Wheeler and his wife Pauline. Most of us flew together to Frankfurt airport and were then transferred by coach to meet our hosts. On Friday afternoon we were taken to the National Carnival Museum in Kitzingen – a fascinating experience.
Saturday morning saw us at the reception in the Town Hall (Rathaus), where presents were exchanged. There was one special present, given to our previous chairman Anthea Cross – a bottle of the latest produce from Ochsenfurt – Old Owl Whisky!
Sunday saw the start of the Folk Music Festival, preceded by a service in St. Andreas church with the priest being assisted by Canon Kenneth Noakes of St Catherine’s Wimborne Minster. This was followed by a procession up to the Rathaus and the start of the fun and festivities including one hour trips up and down the river on the little ferry Nixe with musicians on board.
The Ochsenfurt ferry called the Nixe.
When the pedestrian bridge was being repaired about six years age, there was no way over the river for people and cyclists except the big new bridge, so the then Burgermeister, Peter Wesselowsky (known as Wesse) saw the Nixe advertised for sale in Amsterdam, bought it and sailed it upriver on the Rhine and the Main; it has been a great success, and is well loved and used! The day ended with a farewell dinner where we were given tastings of four local wines. In between the group activities there was plenty of time for visits to local places of interest and, of course, beer and wine festivals.
On Monday morning most of the group flew back home from Frankfurt. To see some pictures of Ochsenfurt and what we got up to this year, have a look at the Gallery.
