2018 Visit to Wimborne Minster

Most of our friends from Ochsenfurt arrived on the evening of Thursday 31st May after a long coach journey across Europe from their homes in Ochsenfurt, although two families travelled independently, taking a longer holiday in England. The following morning we made the most of a fine weekend with a trip to Durlston Country Park and Swanage. Some of the more adventurous group members managed to get a swim in the sea despite the temperature being only 11C!

The next day (Saturday 2nd June), in the gardens of Wimborne Model Town, the Mayor of Wimborne, Cllr. Kelly Webb, welcomed the 29 guests in German and wished them an enjoyable stay. Replying on behalf of Ochsenfurt Town Council Britta Huber brought greetings from the Mayor of Ochsenfurt. Burkard Bähr, Chairman of the Ochsenfurt twinners, emphasised the ideals underpinning the partnership between the towns, which had been founded initially in a spirit of reconciliation, and now more than ever sought to promote friendship and understanding. Wimborne hosts were thanked for their hospitality by Selina Sönmez representing Ochsenfurt as Sugar Fairy, a role which reflects the importance of the large sugar factory to the town’s economy. After an exchange of gifts, visitors and their hosts shared a convivial buffet supper and German wine tasting.

The journey back to Germany started early on Sunday morning. We are already looking forward the return visit to Ochsenfurt in 2019!
